Bicycle lane in Kilmainham

Cyclists will be glad to hear the missing part of the bike lane outside the Hilton Hotel in Kilmainham has been reinstated after representations from local residents.

About 100 yards of the two-way bike lane disappeared three years ago to allow for construction work at the Hilton and the associated apartment blocks. Despite the fact that building work has been finished for over a year now, there was no sign of the reinstated track until CIE resident Kay White put the city council under pressure.

After the most recent flurry of emails to the council last week, the reinstated cycle lane magically reappeared last week.

However, the problem of taxis and other cars parking on the cycle lane remains. The track in question is mandatory (as denoted by the solid white line at its perimeter) which means cars are not allowed park or pull over into it under any circumstances.

However, it is understandable that taxis waiting for customers from the hotel would need to idle outside for a time. There are a number of recessed parking spaces but they tend not to be used.

The council has said it will enforce the parking regulations, so we can expect to see the clampers active in the area in the coming weeks!
