Fire in Inchicore

DOZENS of houses were evacuated last night as firefighters battled a major blaze at a disused factory.

The fire at the former Knorr soup and Lyons tea factory sent billows of thick black smoke across much of Dublin's skyline.

Homes and shops along Kilworth Road and the surrounding area in Inchicore were evacuated as the acrid smoke blanketed much of the area.

Ten units of the Dublin Fire Brigade -- including an aerial ladder that continuously sprayed water on the roof -- continued to fight the fire last night.

The premises on Davitt Road went up in flames around 5.30pm.

No one was injured in the blaze.

Service on the Red LUAS line between Blackhorse and Heuston Station was suspended for about an hour shortly before 7pm as firefighters pumped water from the adjacent Grand Canal to battle the blaze.
